In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 6:10pm Thursday afternoon Beijing time (2:10pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a man wearing an explosive belt blew himself up at a meeting of the al-Karmah administrative chief with local tribal representatives.  Al-Karmah is a small town located about 53km west of Baghdad; 7km east of al-Fallujah.

Xinhua reported a source in the ar-Ramadi police as saying that the bomber detonated his explosive belt at 11:05am local time Thursday, during a meeting of the top local administrative official with tribal leaders.  The subject of the meeting was security and public services in the area.  At least 15 people were killed, including Kamal ‘Abd as-Salam, the local administrator.

Also killed in the attack was Shaykh Muzhir Shawwah al-Jumayli, the chief of the local tribes.

Seventeen people were also wounded in the attack, some of them severely.  Among the injured were some policemen and tribal chiefs.  The attack appeared to bear the marks of the al-Qa‘idah organization.

Bombs kill 17 in attack targeted on Ninwa Province governor’s motorcade.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 7:16pm Thursday afternoon Beijing time (3:16pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that two powerful explosions shook the area near the Ninwa Province government building in al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad after noon on Thursday.

Xinhua reported a source in the city police as saying that the first explosion came from a bomb, the second from a car bomb.  The blasts occurred at nearly the same time, with the first going off in the popular Bab at-Tub market near the government building as the motorcade of the local governor, Durayd Kashmulah was passing by.  Moments later, a car bomb that had been parked by the side of the road nearby went off, also apparently targeted on the governor.

In a dispatch posted 8:32pm Thursday evening Beijing time (4:32pm in Baghdad), Xinhua reported a source in the city police as saying that 17 people were killed, two of them body guards of the governor.  Another 62 people were wounded in the two explosions, five of them bodyguards of the governor.

The governor himself was unharmed.  Chaos followed the explosions as security men rushed to close off the area and transport the casualties to hospitals for treatment.

Since 10 May US and Iraqi government forces have been carrying out a campaign against the al-Qa‘idah organization in al-Mawsil and Ninwa Province.
