·    US announces death of two American soldiers in two non-combat traffic accidents Saturday.

·    Car bomb near café in al-Hillah kills one, wounds five.

US troops arrest 15 Iraqi travelers on their way from Baghdad to Damascus Sunday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 4:35pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that US troops arrested 15 Iraqi civilians who were on their way to Syria along the International Highway near al-Fallujah, 60km west of Baghdad at midday Sunday.

Yaqen reported a source in the al-Fallujah police as saying that the Americans blocked the highway near al-Fallujah, and stopped all vehicles on the road at about 7am Sunday morning.  Then, for the next five hours, the Americans conducted searches of all the busses running from Baghdad to Damascus, opening the road again only at noon.  The US troops arrested 15 people who had been taken out of one of the busses belonging to the Duyuf al-‘Arabiyah travel company.  The US troops took the travelers and their luggage away to an American base near al-Fallujah.

Al-Habbaniyah.

Two mortar shells fired at US al-Habbaniyah air base before dawn Sunday.

In a dispatch posted at 10am Baghdad time Sunday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that  two mortar shells were fired at the US airbase at al-Habbaniyah, 70km west of Baghdad, at 2:45am before dawn Sunday morning.

Yaqen reported an officer in the Iraqi police in al-Habbaniyah who asked not to be identified as saying that five minutes elapsed between the launch of the first and second mortar shells.  After the attack, a large force of American troops deployed in the area around the base, searching for the attackers, a major in the police told Yaqen.

Resistance group claims to fire three mortar shells at US troops.

In a dispatch posted at 10:30pm Baghdad time Sunday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the Iraqi resistance group that calls itself the Army of the Rashidin, a constituent member group in the Jihad and Change Front, had issued a communiqué.

Yaqen reported the statement as claiming that fighters of the Rashidin Army had fired three 60mm mortar shells at US troops somewhere to the east of Baghdad.  The communiqué claimed that the shells scored direct hits on the US forces, but gave no indication as to when or where the alleged attack had taken place.

Resistance group claims to fire two mortar shells at US base in southern Baghdad.

In a dispatch posted at 7:25pm Baghdad time Sunday evening, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the Iraqi resistance group that calls itself the Brigades of the Army of ar-Rahman in Iraq, a constituent member group in the Jihad and Change Front, had announced that its soldiers fired three mortar shells at an unnamed US base to the south of Baghdad.

Yaqen reported the communiqué issued by the group as claiming that its fighters lobbed three mortar rounds into the American camp, scoring direct hits on the facility.  The communiqué, dated 3 August, did not specify which American facility had been the target of the alleged attack or when that was supposed to have taken place.

US announces death of second US soldier in August.

In a dispatch posted at 5:10pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the US had announced that one of its soldiers had been killed and another injured in a traffic accident southwest of Baghdad Saturday.

Yaqen reported that the death was the second American to be reported killed since the start of August this year, both of them in non-combat traffic mishaps.

Bomb wounds four in southwestern Baghdad Sunday.

In a dispatch posted at 3:43pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb exploded under the al-Bayya‘ Bridge in southwestern Baghdad as a patrol of Iraqi government police was passing by.  Yaqen reported a source in the police as saying that the blast wounded four people.

Bomb near Baghdad hospital wounds six civilians, three policemen on Sunday.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 3pm Sunday afternoon Beijing time (10am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a bomb that had been planted between two concrete blocks near the al-Kindi Hospital in central Baghdad blew up by an Iraqi police patrol on Sunday morning.

Xinhua reported a source in the police as saying that the blast wounded six civilians and three policemen, in addition to damaging one of the patrol vehicles.

Bomb wounds two civilians in southern Baghdad Sunday.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 3pm Sunday afternoon Beijing time (10am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a bomb exploded under the al-Ghadir Bridge in southern Baghdad on Sunday.

Xinhua reported a source in the Iraqi police as saying that the blast was apparently targeted on a convoy of four four-wheel-drive vehicles, but the bomb went off seconds after the procession had already passed.  As a result no one in the convoy was injured and none of the convoy vehicles was harmed, but two civilians who happened to be in the area were wounded in the blast.

Car bomb kills seven in Sunni district of Baghdad Sunday.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 3:01pm Sunday afternoon Beijing time (10:01am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a car bomb parked by the side of a road in the Sunni al-A‘zamiyah section of northern Baghdad exploded early on Sunday morning.

In an update posted at 4:17pm in Beijing (11:17am in Baghdad) Xinhua reported a source in the Iraqi police as saying that the blast, which occurred on al-Maghrib Street near the Passport Department, killed 12 Iraqis and wounded 22 more of them.  A number of private cars and buildings were also damaged in the explosion, to which ambulances and security forces responded.

US announces death of American soldier in non-combat incident Saturday.

In a dispatch posted at 12:45pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the US military announced Sunday that one of its troops had been killed and a second injured in a non-combat traffic accident in Balad, 80km north of Baghdad, on Saturday.  Yaqen reported that this was the first US fatality reported in August.

Iraqi forces arrest 50 in security sweep near ad-Dulu‘iyah.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 4:17pm Sunday afternoon Beijing time (11:17am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that Iraqi government security forces arrested 50 “suspects,” most of them targeted in a security operation lead by Staff Major General Hamad Namis, the Chief of Police in Salah ad-Din Province.

Xinhua reported a source in the police as saying that a force made up of four regiments of Emergency Police together with Rapid Deployment forces launched the offensive in the ad-Dulu‘iyah area, 100km north of Baghdad, at dawn on Sunday.

Iraqi regime captures 269 in first five days of operation against al-Qa‘idah in Diyala Province.

In a dispatch posted at 11:09am Baghdad time Sunday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the Iraqi Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that a total of 269 people had been arrested, including one woman, in the first five days of the US-backed offensive against al-Qa‘idah in Diyala Province that began on Tuesday, 29 July.

Yaqen reported major General Muhammad al-‘Askari, the official spokesman for the Defense Ministry, as the source of the statistic.  Al-‘Askari said that the first stage of the operation, the target of which is al-Qa‘idah, has been the provincial capital of Ba ‘qubah.  The second stage, however, is to focus on other towns and cities in the province and clashes with the gunmen are expected as raids are carried out of districts regarded as “hot zones” such al al-‘Azim, Buhriz, and Jabal Hamrayn.

Car bomb near café in al-Hillah kills one, wounds five.

In a dispatch posted at 10:15pm Baghdad time Sunday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a car bomb exploded in front of a popular coffee house in al-Hillah, the provincial capital of Babil Province, 100km south of Baghdad on Sunday.

Yaqen reported a source in the police as saying that the blast killed one person and wounded five more when it occurred in the Nadir ath-Thaniyah neighborhood of centeral al-Hillah.

Iraqi military kill two gunmen in firefight Sunday morning.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 8:05pm Sunday evening Beijing time (3:05pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that Iraqi army troops killed two gunmen in a firefight that erupted to the northeast of al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad, before midday Sunday.

Xinhua reported Khalid ‘Abd as-Sattar, the official spokesman of the Ninwa Province Operations Command, as saying that none of the Iraqi government troops was injured in the clash with the gunmen.

Since 10 May, the US and its Iraqi regime allies have been waging an offensive against the al-Qa‘idah organization, known for its suicide attacks, in al-Mawsil and surrounding Ninwa Province.

US, Iraqi regime forces arrest five al-Qa‘idah gunmen west of al-Mawsil.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 8:05pm Sunday evening Beijing time (3:05pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that US and Iraqi army troops carried out raids and searches in Wadi ‘Akkab to the west of al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad.

Xinhua reported that the operation resulted in the arrest of five gunmen belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq – a front for the Sunni sectarian al-Qa‘idah organization.

Since 10 May, the US and its Iraqi regime allies have been waging an offensive against the al-Qa‘idah organization, known for its suicide attacks, in al-Mawsil and surrounding Ninwa Province.

Iraqi government police arrest 48 alleged members of Iranian-backed Special Groups south of an-Nasiriyah Sunday.

In a dispatch posted at 4:05pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that Iraqi government police arrested 48 alleged members of the “Special Groups” – armed fighters backed by Iran – in the course of raids and searches Suq ash-Shuyukh, 355km southeast of Baghdad, on Sunday.

Yaqen reported a source in the police as saying that the operation also led to the seizure of quantities of weapons, including explosives, 19 Kalashnikov assault rifles, in addition to a number of unregistered cars – likely to have been stolen or smuggled into the country.

Since March, the US-backed Iraqi regime has been actively engaged in an offensive against the pro-Iranian Sadr Movement and its armed wing, the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia, in Iraq, in what is believed to be preparation for an American attack on Iran.
